SMESA's Stall at a Garage Sale,

26 Jan 2008, Saturday

For the third year in a row, SMESA rented a stall at the Crossroads Garage Sale to sell second-hand items.  This year’s sale was held at the Cairnhill Community Club on Saturday, 26th January.  The money raised will go into SMESA’s general fund to help defray expenses for our activities. (The Jumble Sale was organised by Crossroads, a company that facilitates the moving of homes).

 SMESA Activities held in 2007

1.          SMESA's Stall at a Jumble Sale, 3 March 2007, Saturday : A group of SMESA members set up a stall at a Jumble Sale at the Cairnhill Community Club on Saturday, 3rd March.  Many new and used items were put on sale at bargain prices, and the response was good.  The funds raised from the stall will go towards the organising of activities for SMESA. (The Jumble Sale was organised by Crossroads, a company that facilitates the moving of homes).

2.          SMESA Annual General Meeting, 24 March 2007, Saturday : The SMESA Annual General Meeting was held on 24th March, Saturday, at 2 pm in the Conference Room, St. Margaret's Secondary School.  The afternoon’s proceedings included the presentation of reports by SMESA’s President and the election of office bearers for 2007/08.  After the meeting, the members proceeded for tea and had a pleasant time reminiscing about their school days.

3.          Rice Dumpling Making  :  St Margaret’s Secondary School (18 July 2007) and St Margaret’s Primary School (24 July 2007) : To impart cultural values to the students, SMESA conducts a demonstration on the making of rice dumplings at the primary school and secondary school every year.  This year’s demonstrations were not held during the Rice Dumpling Festival as the schools were closed for the mid-year holidays.  Instead, we held them during the Racial Harmony Day celebrations. (18th July for the secondary school and 24th July for the primary school). The students showed great enthusiasm and were enthralled that they were able to wrap a dumpling, although not so perfectly!

4.          “Back to School?Reunion High Tea, 4 August 2007 : As part of our alumni objectives, to create opportunities for ex-students to gather, renew old ties with the school and their friends, recount old times, make new friends, and just simply to eat and be merry, we held a high tea on 4th August for our members and their friends in the Secondary School.  We also arranged for the School’s Heritage Gallery to be opened for our members to visit.  The event was a success. We had a good mix of young and senior ladies. There were quick self-introductions all round and the sharing of many beautiful and fond memories through light-hearted chit-chat and the showing of photographs taken from school days over a simple tea.  Many had not returned to SMSS since collecting their “O?Level results!  Some ex-students even brought along their daughters who were current students. It was certainly a heartwarming event.

5.          Yoghurt Making, 25 August 2007, Saturday : On 25th August, members of SMESA and the Parents Support Group (Secondary School) were at the Secondary School for a ‘Home-made Yoghurt?demonstration.  Besides learning the art of making tasty yoghurt and yoghurt drinks, we also learnt about the goodness of yoghurt.

6.          Visiting Mdm Dorothy Wong, 16 September 2007, Sunday : As part of our on-going programme to visit ex-teachers of the School, several members paid a visit to our former Mathematics/Arts teacher, Mdm Dorothy Wong (Mrs Tan to many of us) on 16th September.  (She had been teaching from 1940 to 1975).  We had much fun and laughter reminiscing about the good old school days, whilst enjoying the food we had brought along.  We believe Mdm Wong enjoyed the afternoon as much as we did.  It was wonderful to see her, as spirited as ever and still running her travel business.  As we were leaving, she told us that she was looking forward to our next visit - which we shall of course be making.

7.          Visit to National Museum, 1 September 2007, Saturday : On 1st September, a little group of ex-students took a guided tour at the National Museum of Singapore. We had not visited the building since it re-opened in December 2006 after extensive refurbishment.  It was quite impressive - how the modern gelled with the old in a seamless connection through the use of glass and light. The guided tour took us through the History Gallery. This tour was surprisingly interesting with our volunteer guide peppering his explanations on Singapore’s history with little anecdotes. It was apparent that the museum had put quite a lot of thought in the visual display of its exhibits in an effort to liven up Singapore’s history and make it interesting for the visitor, as well as to give the visitor a sense of walking through time.

8.          SMESA Bursary : SMESA supported some St Margaret’s Secondary School (SMSS) students through our Bursary Fund by providing them with assistance for their 2007 examination fees.  On 17th September, SMESA President, Ms Pixie Ho, presented a cheque to Mrs Marion Tan, Principal of SMSS, who received it on behalf of the students.

9.          Visit to St Andrew’s Cathedral Home for the Aged, 6 October 2007, Saturday : Visits to the St Andrew’s Cathedral Home for the Aged have been part of SMESA’s community outreach programme.  This year, we were at the Home on 6th October.   As always, the residents were very pleased to see us that afternoon.  We had a lovely time chatting with them.  Some simply loved telling us their ‘stories? while others were quieter.  We brought along various items (like dried food, talcum powder and face towels) which the Home, at our request, had informed us would be useful to the residents.  We left the Home feeling that it was, once again, a time well spent.

10.         St. Margaret's 165th Anniversary Dinner, 16 Nov 2007, Friday : A dinner was held at the secondary school on 16th November to commemorate the 165th Anniversary of our School.  Many turned up for the dinner, including students and staff of the primary school and secondary school; members of the Parents Teachers Association (Primary School), Parents Support Group (Secondary School), SMESA, School Management Committee and the Church; as well as well-wishers.  The Guest of Honour was Bishop John Tan.  In addition to the good food and company, the guests also enjoyed a wonderful programme of songs and dances performed by the students of the School.

11.         Reunion High Tea, 15 Dec 2007, Saturday : SMESA held a Reunion High Tea at the primary school on 15th December.  The event was organised to provide an opportunity for SMESA members (as well as their family members and friends) to visit the new Heritage Centre at the primary school and to interact and share their thoughts on future SMESA activities.
